Program Description:

The first part of this program is a 4 credit hour science lecture-lab course which may be substituted for GLY-1102 in fulfillment of the core science requirement. The course will be an inquiry based study of the geology, marine biology and oceanography of the northern Adriatic Sea and will include 36 hrs of lecture/discussion and 28 hrs of lab practicals, including field work in the Adriatic. The second course in the program is a 2 credit hour elective which is an introduction to 3,000 years of Croatian culture concentrating on how the physical environment contributes to cultural development.


When & How much:

The program will travel as a group and depart from Charlotte-Douglas International on Friday May 9th and will return to Charlotte on Tuesday May 27th.  The cost of the Program is $3060, plus tuition and spending money.
    Due dates:  $300 with application, $920 on Jan. 31st, $920 Feb. 29th, and $920+tuition by April 4th, 2008.

Where:

The course will be housed in the Pula Aquarium, located on the Verudela Peninsula, just south of
downtown Pula.

GLY-3540  Introduction to Scientific Inquiry: Evolution and
                  Natural History of the Adriatic Sea

                 Can be substituted for GLY-1102 (fulfills ½ of required SCIENCE area
                      when paired with GLY-1101 Introduction to Physical Geology)

                  Corequisite: GLY-3540. Combined courses for this OEP is 6 credit hours.

Instructor:

Dr. Steven J. Hageman is an Associate Professor of Geology at Appalachian State University.  In 2007 he was a Fulbright Scholar in Croatia and performed research with Rudiger Boskovits Istitute. He has an active research program in paleoecology and evolution. At Appalachian he teaches introductory Historical Geology, Preparation of Geologic Reports and Concepts of Paleontology.
