Description GLY-3541
Culture
and
Natural History of Croatia
Introduction
to the culture of the
Istrian Peninsula and northern Dalmatian coast in Croatia from
prehistoric to
the recent. Emphasis will be placed on how the natural environment
(geology,
biology and oceanography) affected the culture and lifestyles of these
people
through time. An general
introduction to modern Croatian language and customs will also be
provided.
Includes guided tours (by locals) of the 3000 year old cities of Pula
and
Zadar, an introduction to the recent battlefields for CroatiaÕs war for
independence (1991-95).
Course Goals: Students
will learn how to appreciate a different culture by gaining an
understanding of
the controls imposed on culture by the natural environment. Students
will
maintain a journal that includes both personal insights and carefully
documented notes with cross references to their photographs and other
literary
and digital resources. This will introduce the to a model for
documenting their
experiences as a life-long learner/scholar/traveler.

Learning
Outcomes: Course grades will be
based on participation, class
